Trained Dry Needling

Dry needling is a treatment technique used by our trained physiotherapists to reduce muscle pain, tension, and dysfunction. It involves inserting very thin, sterile needles into specific points in the muscle known as trigger points — tight knots that can cause pain, restricted movement, or referred discomfort in other areas of the body.

What Is Dry Needling?

Despite the use of needles, dry needling is not the same as acupuncture. While acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine & energy flow, dry needling is grounded in Western medical and anatomical science, focusing on muscle function and neuromuscular health. The term “dry” means no substances are injected - the needle alone is used to stimulate a response in the muscle or connective tissue.

Why We Use Dry Needling:

Releases Muscle Tightness

It targets tight bands or knots in muscles which can restrict motion and cause pain.

The needling causes a local ‘twitch response’ that helps the muscle reset and relax.

Reduces Pain

Needling stimulates the body’s natural pain-relieving chemicals and interrupts nerve signals,

helping to reduce both local and referred pain.

Improves Range of Motion

By releasing muscle tension and improving blood flow, dry needling can help restore normal

muscle movement patterns - ideal for post-injury rehab or chronic stiffness.

Enhances Healing

It increases circulation to the affected area, promoting tissue repair and reduced inflammation.

Deactivates Trigger Points

Trigger points can refer pain to other areas (e.g., a tight neck muscle causing headaches).

Dry needling helps deactivate these points and reduces referred symptoms.

Dry Needling Commonly Asked Questions:

What Does It Feel Like?

You may feel a slight pinch as the needle enters, followed by a deep ache or twitch in the muscle — a sign the trigger point has been hit. Some people feel immediate relief, while others may experience temporary soreness (like post-exercise) for 24–48 hours.

Is Dry Needling Safe?

Yes, when performed by a trained and registered physiotherapist, dry needling is a safe and effective treatment. All needles are single-use and sterile, and physiotherapists are trained to identify appropriate points and contraindications.
